Finding the right talent is rapidly becoming a competitive battlefront. Talent is increasingly becoming a key differentiator in business and consumer services. Google recently cited people as their primary differentiator in the market place over any other consideration. The question becomes how do you find the right people?
Curt Coffman, author of First Break all the Rules, describes talent as individual capability plus job fit. From our experience, we would add that fitting into teams and the corporate environment as equally important. Talent is less about finding people with a lot of capability, but more about whether they have the right attitudes, skills and behaviors to apply their capabilities and experience to your environment.
We excel in identifying the discriminating factors between top and bottom performers for a specific environment. We have studied similar roles in different organizations and found that success factors are very different in each environment. Why? Rules, culture and values have as much to do with performance, as technical skills and experience. The adage, hire for attitude, train for skills, holds a lot of weight. We have been able to demonstrate through extensive research that what works in one environment is rarely mirrored in other environments.
Performance factors, and ultimately competencies, can share common attributes across organizations and roles; but benchmarking factors unique to one environment have a significant impact on what it takes to get results. For example, in one environment, we found that if the employees did not have ‘thick skin’ they simply did not make it within the organization. Employees had to be able to handle criticism well, something we were able to see as a significant difference between top and bottom performers.
From people new to your organization to people moving up within your organization, selecting the right talent is our primary focus. We are confident we can help you benchmark the unique qualities and factors within your environment that will allow you to select the right people for the right role within your organization. |
